Survey results favor later S.C. school start date By Dawn Bryant Aug. 25, 2004 Four out of every five parents of schoolchildren in South Carolina want classes to resume on Aug. 20 or later, according to a new survey released Wednesday.Nearly 80 percent of 898 respondents to a survey by Coastal Carolina University favored the later starts. About 20 percent wanted classes to resume earlier, between Aug. 2 and Aug. 20. The findings give tourism leaders more ammunition as they gear up to push legislators again for later school starts. Leaders of the state's $14.5 billion tourism industry say that parents' opinions were missing in the previous debate. The parents represent all 46 S.C. counties. The survey was funded by a $9,400 grant by the S.C. Travel and Tourism Coalition. Tourism leaders want later starts to save the end of the summer season. Educators say students need more time in class to prepare for tests tied to funding. |
