Uniform school start good idea

Birmingham News Letter to Editor

4/22/04

The bills by Sen. Zeb Little and Rep. Craig Ford regarding school starting later in the summer are a good idea. Not only does it make sense to start classes when the temperature may be a little less than 100 degrees, but there is the legitimate issue of tourist money. What can it possibly hurt to have a later start date, which may enable Alabama to collect more tourist dollars?

Students do not benefit more from having semester tests before Christmas break, as is often argued. They would benefit if the entire state had a uniform starting date due to transfers within the year.

I have taught high-schoolers for 21 years, so I feel I do have some knowledge about this. Support these bills.
