UPDATEOn April 9, 2008, the Alabama House and Senate Education Committees passed a bill that sets June 1 through August 10th as mandatory student vacation time. Basically, the bill prohibits the school year from beginning before August 11 and requires the school year be finished by May 31. House Bill 179
While the language allows the school year to begin five days earlier than we would have liked, it is better than what we have now, which is nothing! And, schools are welcome to start later if they wish. While this may not be exactly want we want now, it is a positive first step.
While we are making headway, this legislation has not been passed by the full House or the full Senate. Please, take a moment to send a message supporting House Bill 179 and Senate Bill 241 to your representative and senator. Don't know who your folks are, don't worry. Just click on the link below and by entering your zip code, all the information will be given to you. http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/zipsearch.html.
The Find Your Legislator section is on the left hand side, half way down. If your zip code is represented by more than one senator or representative you will have another chance to put in your full address at the bottom of the page. Instead of sending your email directly to the Representative or Senator, please use the following addresses and in the Subject Line, put the name of your Senator or State Representative -- this way your email will be printed and delivered for you. General Representative email: house3@alhouse.org General Senator Email: senate.billstatus@alsenate.org As before, please state your support for House Bill 179 and Senate Bill 241 and ask for his/her support when the bill reaches the floor. As always, personal pleas and explanations of why you support these bills and maybe an even later start date are appreciated and encouraged. Again, thanks so much for the work you have already done, this is our last step!
